The God that's Hard to Ignore

You don’t have to be clever to talk about God. Paul wasn’t.

When he walked into Athens—full of philosophers, statues, and people who loved the sound of their own voices—he didn’t start with a complicated argument. He started with what was right in front of everyone. “I see you’re religious,” he basically says. Translation: You’re all trying really hard. Then he points to their altar “to an unknown god,” and you can almost hear him smile: Let me tell you about the One you already know you’re missing.

That’s where it always starts. Not with brilliance. With the obvious.

Look around. The sky doesn’t hold itself up. Oceans don’t politely stay in their lanes by accident. Your heart is beating right now without asking your permission. Creation is not subtle—it’s shouting. The problem isn’t lack of evidence. It’s that we’d rather keep God vague. Safer that way. An “unknown god” doesn’t interrupt your life.

But Paul won’t leave Him unknown.

He says this God made everything. Not part of it. Not most of it. All of it. And He’s not needy, not distant, not playing hide-and-seek. “He’s actually not far from each one of us,” Paul says. Which is either wonderful news or deeply uncomfortable, depending on how much control you think you have.

And then Paul does something risky. He gets specific.

Because general spirituality is easy. You can talk about “the universe” or “higher power” all day long and nobody gets upset. But Paul doesn’t leave it there. He says God has fixed a day when He will judge the world—and then he drops the bomb: He’s given proof by raising a man from the dead.

Now it’s not abstract anymore. Now it’s about Jesus.

That’s where people start to squirm. Some laugh. Some walk away. Some want to hear more. Same reactions today. Because once you move from “something out there” to a crucified and risen Christ, you’re not dealing with a concept—you’re dealing with a King.

But don’t miss the kindness in it.

God doesn’t leave you guessing. He doesn’t say, “Figure me out.” He points. From creation to Christ. From the obvious to the undeniable. From “you know there must be something” to “here He is.”

And the One He shows you is not just powerful—but pierced. Not just Creator—but Savior. The God who made everything is the God who went all the way into death and came back out the other side… for you.

So you don’t have to settle for an unknown god.

Easter Hope in a World of Wishful Thinking

Christian hope is not the spiritual version of crossing your fingers and muttering, “I hope this works out.” That’s just baptized wishful thinking—and it collapses the moment life doesn’t cooperate.

Why Holy Week Matters

Dear Grace Family, I'd like to discuss why Holy Week matters in the life of a parish like ours, as there is a perennial temptation in the church to skip ahead to Easter morning. We are resurrection pe
